The video is dead. What are your options for
recording programs?

LCD TV
LCD TV's
provide clear crisp pictures and take up very little room. Make sure
you choose a TV with built in Freeview and HD Ready. Sony, Panasonic

after sales service. TV's showing HD programs look fantastic in the
shop but ask to see them showing normal SD. Some models look much better
than others on non HD Programs but they all look good when showing
HD which you may not have access to when you get the set home.
Freeview Digital Video Recorders
Digital video recorders can record between 40-80 hours of
programmes without tapes or discs that can be viewed when you choose by
simply selecting them on a list. You can also pause and
rewind live TV. The built in Freeview digital adaptor gives you access to
over 30 TV stations including all the new BBC and ITV channels. Many
models even let your record two stations at the same time. This is
similar to SKY+ but there is no monthly bill to pay.
Freesat is a new service providing digital
TV stations similar to Freeview.
The difference with FREESAT is that you need a satellite dish instead of
a conventional TV aerial and the big plus is that you can receive HD
High Definition TV programs if you have a HD Freesat box and HD TV. If
you live in a poor reception area and find it difficult to receive
Freeview you should be able to receive FREESAT without any problems. If
you have an unused SKY dish it should pick up FREESAT programs without
any adjustment.
Box prices will start from £49, with a high definition box available
from £120, plus installation costs from around £80 if you do not have a
satellite dish.
CAMCORDERS
Camcorders have never been cheaper. Models
start from around £130 and offer many features. There are now a number
of methods used to record your movies.
DV Tape is still the most popular, along with DVD, Hard Disc and now SD
memory cards like those found in 'still camera's'. Most some with
software to let you edit your work on a computer. If that sound like
hard work you can just plug the camera into your DVD recorder and copy
the bits you want to a DVD.
