Youth Club Awarded Funding
Cheswick Green Youth Club has been awarded Ł2000 from the West Midlands
Police Authority.
The presentation took place on Friday 28th May at the Village Hall. As
well as meeting once a week the youth club provides trips and shortly
youngsters will be able to try their hand at sailing with an outing to
the Youth Afloat centre in Redditch. The youth club also has members
from Earlswood and Dickens Heath and has been operating for just over a
year. more pictures |

I grew up around Cheswick Green as my father was a bricklayer working on
Cheswick. We emigrated to oz in 2006, as we felt it was better to bring up
Michaela, Shani, and Chelsea .we lived on spinney drive and willow drive for
many years.
The Saxon changing hands from don to Malcolm changed the
village life for good. Kerry and myself decided to go, before it got too bad
, the girls love the lifestyle and good weather.

I've recently read on the internet that the area around the Mount at
Cheswick Green is supposedly haunted??? I wonder if any readers might know
anything about such stories - or perhaps of accounts elsewhere around the
region? Many thanks.

When we were kids living in "chezick" in the 70's, Stuart Nicholls was
the local cop, if he even heard that we were being a nuisance he would find
us and smack us round the ear, it was a great deterrent, then some cop
called Ray something came on the beat and arrested us all for misdemeanours,
Cheswick Green was never the same again. It was funny when some hero
shot the next cops car with an air rifle though.!!!! you know who you are.

Missing Cat! Theo has been seen several times in Creynolds Lane
and Cheswick Green Village. He is a 13yr old long-haired (bushy tailed)
silver tabby. might still be wearing black collar with green studs with cat
shaped id tag. He is nervous shy and timid. Desperate to have him back home.
Phone 0121 745 3364 if you have info. or sighting. Many thanks.
PS Have walked around the village looking for him and have met so many nice
and helpful people-a nice community spirit.

I don't wish to upset the dog owners of the village, but I wonder if
more owners could take 'poop scoops' with them whilst walking their pets on
the public footpaths. I have noticed quite a lot of dog dirt around these
pretty walks recently which is easily avoidable, not to mention illegal on
public walkways. It is not pleasant when the little ones return home having
stepped or fallen in dog dirt. Maybe the council could make more bins
available to help owners do the right thing?

I agree with the comments made about these young undesirables! Often
I've seen groups of them hanging around on the grassy areas preserved for
flowers and other things of beauty. Trampling our wonderful flowers! Often
they'll stay there all day, shouting and laughing with each other. I'm not
sure if ASBOs can be given for shouting and laughing, but perhaps we should
contact Solihull Council to see that it stops. I've lived here for 60 years
and have never seen it so bad. On my way back from the shop not long ago a
youth kicked his football in my direction, and I was so scared of being hit
that I dropped my Daily Mail. Not only that, but my husband Jeremy came out
one afternoon to find his Jaguar had a dent in, no doubt caused by these
miscreants and their 'sports'. I say we introduce a curfew and BAN ball
games through the whole of the Cheswick Green area.

In regards to the vandalism - I grew up in Cheswick Green and loved the
community spirit. I miss summer fetes with the tug of war and
Victorian
swings and would love to be a part of that again. I suggest that residents
should stick together to create a suitable environment for young and older
kids alike, and always supervise well, as my parents did, almost a
neighbourhood watch, possibly a voluntary group at the village hall once a
week? One question: does anyone know if these kids are local? I turned out
alright and am proud to say I'm a Cheswick kid! Jane

however I have noticed the drastic increase in vandalism following the
problems with the Cheswick Green youth club. large groups of kids ranging in

I am afraid to leave my house after 3o'clock and I personally want to put a

rectify the problem. I want to see a difference made

conjunction with the local community will prove a success. in eradicating
this recent rise of this destructive youthful behaviour we brace ourselves
with foreboding as summer approaches long school holidays and bored youths

I think that they should be some more equipment in the park for some older
children, a lot of my friends think there isn't much to do at the park now.
the mount has a lot of stingers now and has overgrown a lot maybe people in
Cheswick green could cut it down. i think there should be some more bins
around Cheswick Green not just near the shops, that might stop the amount of
litter.

Regarding the last entry about the young boy throwing an object at a vehicle
at 3am on New years day - this behaviour is an ongoing problem. We are
having to pay for damage to our vehicle that was done in the early hours of
Saturday 21st January by a crowd of youths throwing missiles. A further act
of vandalism occurred in our road on Saturday 21st at 9.30pm to my
neighbour's vehicle. I certainly think that it is time the police stepped up
their presence in the village.

My wife was taking someone home in her car to Cheswick Green at about 3am
(note 3AM) new years day. As she drove into Cheswick Green village a young
boy (only about 10) threw something at her car that seemed like a brick.
She turned round to talk to the boy but he ran off.
Bearing in mind the last append on this page about crime and vandalism maybe
the police need to increase their presence in the village.

Crime and Vandalism in Cheswick Green
Within the last fortnight, my wife had her car vandalised twice; and during
the same period I know some of the residents on Cheswick Way had their cars
vandalised in the same manner, i.e. side mirrors pushed out. People on
Cheswick Way have suffered such crimes on numerous occasions, including eggs
thrown at the front doors and windows. And I have seen youngster (boys and
girls) loitering near the Saxon pub in the late evenings. When are we going
to see those youngsters brought to account for their criminal activities? We
need to undertake a comprehensive survey of the whole village to establish
how safe Cheswick Green is and who these anti social elements are. I am
sure they are residents of the village and only if their parents knew what
their offspring are up to then and only then we can have a safe village.

BMX-ing. I use the park on a daily basis and am disappointed by the lack of
things to do. I have lived here for 4 years but previously lived in
Shirley where they have a great skate park which is too far for me to travel
to now. I would really love it if we could have something like that at our
park, or maybe have a BMX track made of mud.

Regarding the local football pitch. The area in front of the goals are full
of holes and it is only a matter of time before someone has a serious
accident, (like breaking an ankle). The pitch is a great idea, enjoyed by
many children. Does anyone know if anything safely and last for some time
can be done about the holes. ie small piece of Astroturf in front of the
goals.

In connection with the golf 'academy' that caused so much up roar, I would
like to think of the positive side of it. Earlswood only at the moment
offers peaceful walks and fishing. I think a 'golf academy' would offer so
much to a little community. It would create jobs and business for
surrounding shops and pubs and would make Earlswood more attractive to
outsiders who only pass it off as another countryside place that is not
quite on the same level as Henley in Arden or Kenilworth. Your views on this
would be much appreciated but I thought it unfair just to hear all the
negative points to this. Maybe people could do a little more research before
protesting.

Re Proposed Golf Academy
I think it would get the village more popular and new interests for kids and
maybe teenagers. Golf clubs are not busy places, and I don't think they
would be open at night. I think it would be a good idea as I don't see the
land being used much anyway. Also there is a cricket club that don't seem to
cause any trouble why would a golf course be any different?

Re Skateboarding
About the skateboarding part of the park I think that gee was correct
you need to add half pipes or ramps or something because the money that
everyone raised to accomplish the suitable surface is just a waste of space
and money. I am not a devoted skater myself but i used to go with a friend
to the skating park in Balsall Common there are half pipes, quarter pipes
and odd things it is not massive but ideal for young kids and teenagers with
nothing to do and it would stop teenagers from reeking havoc on fellow
villagers.

just 18 and used to skateboard when I was 13 to 16. This is not going to
provide a good enough attraction for all the 'skaters', the area is too
small. To save money we need to make/ buy fixed floor ramps. One idea which
I think you should look into, Alcester!! The problem was exactly the same an
for not a high price look what they have done there. look into it an e-mail

Hockley Heath Parish Council Election News
In February 2002 Government officers started the process of a Periodic
Electoral Review of the electoral make-up of Solihull Borough. This process
included a consultation period and the publication of a report of their
findings. Hockley Heath Parish Council and all four Residents Associations I
the Parish responded to the consultation document. So did large numbers of
residents in the Parish, which was all recorded in the interim report which
demonstrated the interest local people have in their electoral arrangements.
Although the final decision has not been published yet, I can tell you that
recommendations in the interim report, to be sent to The Electoral
Commission, is for the Village of Hockley Heath to be put into a Borough
Ward along with Dorridge and the ward to be named “Dorridge and Hockley
Heath” and to remain in the Parish of Hockley Heath. The remaining villages
in the Parish (Cheswick Green, Tidbury Green and Dickens Heath) to be put
into a new Borough Ward along with Monkspath, the recommended name being
“Packwood”. Perhaps the most significant part of the report from the Parish
Council’s point of view is that the whole of the Parish is itself to be
warded in 2004. The recommendation is for the Parish to have four wards with
13 councillors. The Parish Wards will be Hockley Heath which will have 3
parish councillors, Cheswick Green 4, Dickens Heath 4 and Tidbury Green 2.
The difficulty now for parishioners is that the local elections in May this
year will be under the present arrangements to elect 13 Parish Councillors
for the whole of the Parish. Then, in 2004, the new warding arrangements
come into force and you will be expected to vote again, this time for the
number of councillors prescribed for each Parish Ward.
It’s not too early to be thinking of putting your name forward (or twisting
someone else’s arm), the process starts in March. If you are interested but
not sure what the implications are you are more than welcome to come along
to one of our meetings or you can contact me or any other member for a chat.

Urban Crop Circle?
It has come to my notice that an unusual variation of the Summer
phenonomen 'The Crop Circle' has appeared right here in Cheswick Green. A rectangular area
measuring 20 by 32 feet appeared overnight at the beginning of July and has so far remains
an unexplained mystery. Theories ranging from an alien landing pad to drunken hi jinx
abound and are the topic of conversation at the nearby Saxon public house.
Balloon Landing Site?
It is understood that the platform designed and produced with the sole purpose of
a flat, safe and clean area for Balloon Landing is being used (unauthorised) by people
without Balloons. Without locked fencing this cannot be avoided. It is understood that an
armed member of 'The Cheswick Green Ballooning Club' will be sited and will address known
trespassers personally.
Radio Controlled Car Platform?.
The platform was designed and produced with the sole purpose of a flat, safe and clean
area for Radio Controlled Cars is being used (unauthorised) by people without Radio
Controlled Cars. Without locked fencing this cannot be avoided. It is understood that an
armed member of 'The Cheswick Green Radio Controlled Car Racing Team' will be sited and
will address known trespassers personally.
In addition the 'stage' when lightly dusted with sand has been used by the local tap
dancing class for the Soft Shoe Shuffle (which must be said is very good indeed) and the
'Cheswick Green Blythe River Dancers' have
been helping to keep the warping down to a minimum by being very accurate in their
rehearsals. |

PROTEST OVER PLANS FOR GOLF ACADEMY IN EARLSWOOD - 16 August 2002
A large group of residents from Cheswick Green attended the meeting of Hockley Heath
parish councils planning committee on Wednesday 15 August to protest against plans for a 5
hole golf course, Floodlit Driving Range, Shop and car parking for 36 cars on farmland
alongside St Patrick's Church in Salter Street. Great concern was voiced over the placing
of an access road close to a dangerous blind spot on the Salter Street and Vicarage Road
Junction. Light pollution affecting local residents and the re-siting of an ancient right
of way. Residents were informed that developments of this type were exempt from
restrictions governing greenbelt land.

I have read the history of the Mount on your web site with great interest. My friend Mary
Nugent lived there with her sister and parents in the 50's&60's in Pleasaunce Walk, I
think there is a road named Nugent Grove now?
I used to go to play at her house, and often walked through from Dog kennel Lane across the
fields, and was always fascinated by the early warning bunker under ground in one of the
fields to the right as you walked through to the mount.

I would like to say how wonderful the new fenced play area is! It has added an extra
dimension to Playgroup as we are now able to safely take the children outside to play and
has given us the opportunity to be visibly out and about in the community. Any ideas on
funding to improve/ add to existing play equipment within the fenced area?
As Cheswick Green Under Fives we are always on the look out for funding/ donations/
services from the local community and if anyone can help we would be grateful
e.g. good
quality play equipment, dressing up clothes ( or someone willing to make them) and on a
grander scale a computer!
We are working towards a Quality Accreditation standard and are looking towards improving
what is already an excellent service.
Can I also add thanks to all the people who have already supported us this last year-
among them the Village Hall Management Committee, Solihull C.V.S, The Lotteries Board, The

I lived in Cheswick Green for over 25 years and have many happy childhood memories of
the school, the fields and the happy and safe village atmosphere that seems to be
lacking in many places. I would love to get a copy of the residents magazine each month
etc is that possible as I no longer live there? By the way the site is great and will
revisit from time to time to look at updates.
Although not that old, (in my mid thirties), I can still remember the playground provided
by the house builders in Cheswick Green whilst houses were under construction in the
seventies. Playing on the diggers and bringing home comics builders had left behind that
Dad promptly confiscated!! Cheswick Green was and still is a place for kids to grow up,
playing around the Perch ponds at the back of Dog kennel lane in the summers that never
seemed to end and were always sunny!. I still remember my first day at St Patrick's school
crying in the loos for my mum, whenever I smell carbolic soap, it always
reminds me of Mr
Rawlings and his two pairs of trousers that he wore. Does any one else have memories of
Cheswick Green in the early to mid seventies? I'd love to hear from you.
