Residents of Shirley are welcome to use this page to express views on local issues.

A NEW HEART FOR SHIRLEY TOWN CENTRE
Shirley Town Centre is set to be transformed, bringing new heart and vibrancy to the community.
Solihull Council has chosen Coltham Developments, in partnership with Helical Bar Plc and Oswin Developments, to work with them to deliver the project.
The scheme will see the area gaining a major food store, approximately 70,000 sq ft of non-food stores, and more than 60 residential apartments.
Other developments include offices and leisure provision, along with the enhancement of Shirley Park.
A full community consultation exercise will take place in early 2004 and a detailed planning application will follow later in the year.
Significant improvements to the Stratford Road and Haslucks Green Road will be undertaken, to help ease traffic congestion in the area.
The scheme is part of the Council’s vision of turning Shirley into a successful retail and commercial centre, and it is hoped to attract exciting new retail names to the town centre.
Robert Birch, Director of Coltham Developments said: “We are delighted to be chosen as preferred developer to work with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council on this exciting project. We believe that there is tremendous scope to deliver a scheme of this nature within Shirley. Based around community consultation, the regeneration of Shirley Town Centre will be a development that everyone can be proud of.”
Jonathan Cox, Managing Director of Oswin Developments said: “Shirley has a substantial existing stock of smaller shops but there is considerable demand for larger units from many retailers not currently represented within the town. This development will significantly increase the catchment area for Shirley to the benefit of all traders.”
Solihull Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, Cllr Ian Hillas, said: “This is a real step forward. We have always said we were committed to redeveloping Shirley and turning it into an exciting and vibrant shopping centre, and this is the start. We will be asking people what they’d like to see and working closely with the community to ensure everyone’s views are heard.”

Are you guys insane???? Shirley used to be a beautiful, quiet, pedestrianised, old English village. You should be spending your cash on returning it to that state, not investing in polluting, corrupt, greedy corporate companies who will wipe out the heritage forever. I grew up in Shirley and I now live in London..... to be frank, I live in a toilet! After the initial excitement (which lasts about a week) you realise the city is over-crowded, over-polluted, under-staffed in all of its services, severely lacking in the colour green, and it is putting so much pressure on it's boundaries that it feels like it's going to pop. I am comforted when I think of my home town and to think that you are encouraging it to follow this route upsets me deeply. The population of Shirley and the rest of Solihull does not need to increase. By building new homes and new attractions for under-educated people (ie. anyone who thinks it good to shop at Aldi) you are going to turn our town into a toilet also. Maybe not now, but in 20/30 years time you will see the effects of what you have greedily chose to do to simply earn yourselves a few more pennies in your pocket. If you look back to how Shirley and Solihull used to be many many years ago, you can see how quickly man's greed has spread like a disease. To imagine it spreading anymore is very disturbing. Please please leave Shirley alone. Close down all the supermarkets and those stupid car showrooms, and invest in organic British farmers........ bring back butchers, fisheries, bakers, groceries........ like how it used to be. Shirley/Solihull is meant to be 'urbs in rur', if you continue developing it will inevitably become 'rur in urbs'. Concrete-ville is not cool. The Touchwood shopping centre in Solihull was a massive mistake. It's one big ugly monstrosity. You people do not know the meaning of culture.... 'chav' culture maybe. I thought this was what Birmingham was good at..... Solihull is not Birmingham so LEAVE IT ALONE!!

Lets have another go now that Mr Richards has lost overall control- and hope the cabinet is more equally balanced across the parties - and ditch the whole idea. Even Shirley (dis)advance web site is totally out of date and no more propaganda added. I think Shirley will be renamed Asda Town if we cannot get the thing stopped

I have two comments.  Firstly, does anyone have any idea what is happening with the old Solihull Business Park (where Dave and Busters, Fatty Arbuckles etc used to be) - will anything be built here?  Seems such a waste.
Secondly, can someone with money please please build a soft play centre (very much like Hickory Dickories/Tumble Jungle in Kings Heath) as Solihull is REALLY REALLY missing this.  If I had the money I'd do it myself, as it will be a right money spinner given the right location and promotion.  Pretty please!

Hello. I am trying to obtain any information or direction on a 20th century artist from Solihull, who may have lived in Shirley early 1900's, called J R Jeens. His wife or mother may have been a Mrs A H Jeens 73 Union Road Shirley Solihull . Any lead you give would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Can you confirm that with all the changes in Shirley that we will not lose the park and recreatioal area ?  My daughter and I often visit this space and it would be disastrous to lose it - not only for us but for all the other families out there....

Shirley Sea Cadets. Just to inform you of this great organisation my son attends. It is based on Cadet Drive off Haslucks Green Rd. It is every Mon and Fri 7pm - 9.30pm and they do so much stuff, such as drill, sailing, shooting, canoeing, swimming, engineering and camps too. I have posted this in reply to someone's comments saying they wish there were more things for children to do! If you are interested and you are 10 - 18 or know someone who might be - I do suggest going along on a Monday or Friday - my son loves it and never has he been so busy and loving it!

Hello, I'm a married mother of two and a student nurse living in Shirley, having lived here since 1999. I was brought up in Sparkhill. When I was a child in the 70's there was lots of field space around me, allotments and the parks were safe. There is nowhere there now for children to play safely and most of the green space has been taken up with industrial units or has been sandwiched between them as an afterthought. I am sad and disappointed that Shirley plans to follow suit, I thought when I moved here it would be a nice environment to bring up my children, but already we're stepping aside to let huge unnecessary developments rob us of our open spaces, consume our play areas and add to the already dangerous traffic levels and emissions.
I am a young woman and appreciate the need for modernisation. I agree that Shirley needs a facelift, but if you went to a surgeon for a "facelift" and came back with a face you didn't recognise - would it make you happy?
More supermarkets, more car parking, more traffic. WE DON'T NEED IT. WE DON'T WANT IT.

Ralph, read the Claire's letter again below and observe the words she has used, do you think Claire has just sat down and wrote it as a "Rant", Claire has taken her time to share with us all her views on life in a small place called Shirley, I take it from your letter that you have not experienced the same sort of behaviour from the locals. All I will say to you Ralph is just take a moment to read her words again and this time please put your good self in her position, Claire is far from "Immature" as you so unkindly put it.

Oh yes Claire, let all waste police time!  Surely you must agree the police have better things to do then attend your petty problems.  Maybe consider closing your curtains or perhaps move away from one of the busiest roads in the midlands!  Either way, please stop ringing the police as people like you risk many lives with your immature rants.

Hi I have lived in Shirley since August 2005 and I am sick to death with all these boy racers outside my home. I mean they are there all the time and have nout else to do with themselves. They can be there from 7 till 3 in the morning then when i come home on my dinner they are all there. Where do they get the money from I'd love to know.  My partner and I always phone the police but their excuses every time of why they can not come to move them on. This just isn't fair.  Why should we have to have sleepless nights?  My animals get very scared when the rooms start to vibrate.  The poor people in the Funeral Directors. They just have no respect.  I just wish they'd all bugger off..... If you're sick of it too just keep ringing the police cause they need to do something.  It's getting beyond the joke now.

I would like to say the only reason there is a lot of banks, building societies and super markets is because the rents and rates on these shops are so high little businesses can't afford to pay them so they have to close, and now they are thinking about charging to park in Shirley how much more money do they want. This will Kill Shirley not make it a better place to shop.

ok so...I'm 16 and I've lived in Shirley since I was 5 and Shirley was a great place then but now its getting rough with people coming down from Tyseley and Acocks Green none of the people at the local skate-park can skate because they feel threatened and they have been to the police many times and they do nothing which is useless so we go out and skate on n the street people complain and tell us to go to the park  but if they knew what its like down the park they'd understand but they don't so we skate anyway... Shirley needs to improve its security and safety stop making it look good because it already looks great but then you get the people who ruin it which are the same people as that ruin the skaters fun down the park... boooo to the police.

I have lived in Shirley all my life, I like it a lot but just have always wandered why there's so many charity shops and supermarkets. now there's talk going on about yet another supermarket, asda, and we just don't need any more. I say we have a leisure centre built cause the closest leisure centre round here is Solihull or Acocks green. I have definitely noticed an increase in gangs of youths up to no good in Shirley lately. we need more cameras around and more police down the Stratford road.

Ive lived in Shirley all my life, I'm 24 yrs old and Shirley is in desperate need of a make-over. I would like to buy property in this area, so the new developments are a great idea. The development of the town into a more social environment is also a good idea with new bars, shops etc. As many people have stated, We Do Not need another Supermarket!!!  What we do need to make best use of the land that once was the TA, and get rid of that eye-sore that used to be Powergen. Why can't there be apartments put there looking out over our new Shirley? We definitely need CCTV in Shirley as I have noticed more gangs of people becoming a nuisance, and I've had my car stolen from the M&S Car Park opposite Blockbuster Video, so its not exactly safe is it?  Make a town square filled with fancy bars and restaurants and Shirley will come alive. Bring in some more designer clothing stores to suit our generation and the money will pore in. Solihull is let down by too many shops, not enough decent restaurants and bars. Lets not make the same mistake!!!  Over and Out

All Shirley is now is a shopping haven of charity shops and supermarkets, not forgetting hair stylists , it's becoming ridiculous to say the least, now there's supposedly more supermarkets being built, how mad considering that there's no decent clothe shops for children or adults, Shirley has a few little shops that offer these goods the men's being an expensive name brand shop but we need  cheaper alternatives with a lot more choice, since fosters closed yrs ago there has never been a decent store in Shirley, if i personally want clothes i have to travel out to Solihull or Birmingham, we need a clothing superstore.

A big thank you for the pictures of Shirley in 1937! I lived there in '37,'39'and '40, over and behind the 3rd shop south of the Saracen's Head- my father worked for Paynes Shoe Repairs. I have good memories of those days, and Shirley was a delightful place with a blacksmith on Stratford road where I watched horses being shod, and I loved the Odeon. Happy days, but lost, of course, since I have lived in the U.S.A. since 1956.

Why do Solihull Council NOT listen to the residents? We DO NOT WANT another supermarket but they insist there must be one. What will this do the the already chaotic traffic conditions in Shirley at peak times.
The second thing is who thought up the idea of a red route without the necessary islands in place to help access facilities on the driver's right hand side? All that has been achieved is that traffic is performing u-turns in the side roads. Progress? I hardly think so. Please can we have a little bit of common sense?

I see from page 2 of the 19th December issue of Solihull Times (and from your web site) that Shirley town centre is to have a major transformation. I also see that this includes ANOTHER supermarket.
WE DO NOT WANT OR NEED ANOTHER SUPERMARKET IN SHIRLEY.
I live in the centre of Shirley and from my house can easily get to Safeways, Aldi, and the small Tesco's.
With a short drive I can also get to two Sainsbury's (Shirley and Maypole) and a large Tescos.
How many do we need? How much money is there to spend?
This country is knocking down office blocks and building large supermarkets and shopping centres in their place. Where are people going to work to earn the money to spend in all these supermarkets ?
I lived in Hay Mills a few years ago that had a thriving high street. Then the council knocked down all the shops and houses on one side of the Coventry Road and made it dual carriageway. A large Asda was also built at the end of the high street. When I go back there now the high street is dead and full of closed shop outlets, and the roundabout near Asda is always chaos with the traffic. Do we want that in Shirley ?

Follow-up posting to mine from Tuesday, October 14, 2003 concerning the Evans Halshaw roundabout.
Maybe it's time to re-paint the white lines as some drivers seem not to be aware of the THREE lanes approaching from Shirley towards Monkspath direction. It's quite simple - LEFT to turn left, MIDDLE to go straight ahead, and RIGHT to go straight ahead or turn right. Oh - and the road does "kink" at the roundabout end - don't cut me up if you are in the right-hand lane and then decide to drive in a straight line into the MIDDLE lane at the roundabout! Have you seen the amount of broken glass at this roundabout?
THAT could be YOU next!

We are all concerned with the "Red Route" however I am amazed that not many people comment on Shirley Car Parks. Who designs them? Are they car owners? I somehow doubt it as the design of any car park development in recent years leaves a lot to be desired. Look at Tesco's at Monkspath - you drive in then weave around in a logical order until a space is found. However, when you visit Homebase or JJB on the retail park, you drive through the lines of pedestrians, turn an impossibly tight turn into the car park unavoidably cutting-up people exiting, then have to take a chance on one of the aisles not being full, only to hold-up traffic when you want to drive out again. Then driving out, you mow straight through the shoppers who are crossing the main entrance road!
Shirley High Street Car Park conveniently dumps you opposite Safeways where you can struggle to turn right, or else are forced left away from Shirley. The car spaces are just about big enough for a small car, but anything larger than, say, a Fiesta is going to be right on each line leaving no room to get out.
Sainsburys car park is no easier - everyone exiting has to go through lines of pedestrians who all have to cross to the store................ Designers! Think!

Very good post - Thanks John

Why does this website NOT contain full information on the Red Route and how it will affect users of the Stratford Road, AND roads off of it? Where will we be not able to turn right etc? Will it make any difference to the throughput of traffic when the main pedestrian crossing is so slow? Has an independent study been made as to its benefits for Shirley?

The office block that once housed Powergen personnel has been standing derelict for some time but plenty of ideas have been passed around as to what it could become. Unfortunately, no one seems to like the ideas! For Shirley to continue improving, new business has to arrive in the area and want to sets its roots along the Stratford road. No one is going to do this when every proposal that gets put forward is knocked back down. Shirley needs money and money will come from improved and new business. New business creates new jobs and opportunities for the community, why is that so wrong?

The land is now ready for, well who knows, a new supermarket or a car park or maybe a swimming pool!!?. Maybe even a new ten story office block that can sit empty for a couple of years. Personally I can just see it as a second hand car lot. If only the demolition crew had moved over the road to the old office building, they could have raised that to the ground and done us all a favour.

I grew-up in Majors Green, and played as a child on what is now the new estate. I'm afraid I feel the place is dreadful, and the character of the area has been sadly degraded. The lack of infrastructure consideration is a joke, and the new "traffic calming" and road diversions are a fatal accident waiting to happen.
The "turnover" of residents is amazing! Are they leaving in droves because of the housing boom, or because they cant stand the traffic queues during the rush hour?

Re. Shirley Traffic light humps.
A Brilliant idea! If people think that traffic goes at 30MPH when the lights are on green they haven't been there at 7.00 - 8.30am! The road is supposed to be 30MPH - take a look for yourself!
The Humps do help a bit - and are no problem to bike or car at 30MPH Read more on traffic calming

Reference the humped traffic lights on Stratford Road? What are they there for. When lights are on Red no traffic passes. When on green the traffic can go at 30mph - the legal speed limit - but a lot of drivers new to the area slam on their brakes when they meet the hump and the traffic have to perform hard braking which in the wet could cause problems. Did the council have a lot of spare bricks!!!
Ian Carpenter

I am emailing over my concern about the pedestrian crossing in Shirley High Street being humped. These humps are dangerous for motorcyclists because when a bricked surface becomes wet it is like an ice rink, and does not provided any grip. A motorcyclist who hits the hump may lose control. Also there will be more traffic build up a peak times, and pollution levels will increase.

SOLIHULL LODGE COMMUNITY CENTRE, GRAFTON ROAD, SOLIHULL LODGE
The above Community Centre is run entirely by volunteers, with no help at all from the local Council, we raise money for the up keep of the Centre by regular hirers e.g. Playgroup, Friends In Retirement, Senior Citizens Club, Tea Kwon Do, Bingo, Drama Group, and by hiring out the function room for private parties. We also, as a committee, try to put on functions for everyone e.g. Barn Dance, Beer and Skittles, Race Night etc., and this Friday we are holding a Halloween Disco. All our functions are for everyone of all ages and are all very reasonably priced.

However, it is our AGM on Wednesday the 6th of November and we are DESPERATE for new members of the committee, there are only a very few members left and sadly without more help it is possible we may have to close. If anyone can give just a little of their time we would be very grateful, if anyone is interested in helping us please telephone us or come along to the AGM, or even the Halloween Disco and see exactly what we do. Thank you for your time.

One more thing we have been let down by a DJ who was going to do New Year's Eve for us, so if anyone knows a good DJ who is available and reasonably priced, please let us know - thanks.

Shirley Racecourse Bills Story Contact Us

a popular race track attracting punters from a wide area.
Bill Gilbert's recollections of growing up on the Mount Estate near Shirley during the 30's and 40's make interesting reading. A small collection of pictures taken of Shirley in 1937.
If you can add to this collection please get in touch.
More speed humps have been installed in Shirley. What do you think about traffic calming, is it a fad or a necessity?

Shirley Pipe Band
The Band was formed in 1962 when it evolved from an established Scout Drum and Bugle Band to specialise in the Great Highland Bagpipe. The band flourishes through the long term commitment of its members. Some have remained in the band since its creation and are joined by their sons and daughters. Further members have been recruited locally, or have joined from the scout group. We have a busy training schedule, there normally being up to ten people learning bagpipes or drums at any time. If you live in the area, and have ambitions to be a piper or drummer, then call the Pipe Major or Secretary.
