DESPERATELY SEEKING BRIAN WALKER!
My name is Steve Jones. I am a student at the International Film School of

Walker. Our enquiries have led us to Dickens Heath Council and so we were
wondering whether Brian is employed there and if so, whether you could
forward our details on to him. For our film to be marked properly, our
tutors need to see we have gained the necessary permission from our
contributors. As Brian gave a (fine) interview, it is important that we
contact him. We hope you can help us with our quest! Many thanks and kind
regards, Steven Jones and Matthew Evans.

School: St. Patricks
I went to St Patricks in Earlswood from 1970 to 1972 and having come from a
multi cultural school in the middle of Birmingham this lovely little church
school was a real culture shock. I loved the fact that it was near to the
canal as it reminded me of inner city Birmingham and I used to run away to
the 'cut' after school most days. This was mostly due to being scared to
walk home anywhere near Karen Pettinger and Fiona Hemus. They were a scary
pair. Thanks goodness for Lynne Greves and her big sister Virginia as they
used to scare the others off. Thanks Greves', you made school a bit easier.

Beatties
Hi, I am looking to locate some "old" friends from the Solihull area, I started
my schooling at Valley Road Infants school in 1961, went to Hatchford Brook
1963-1967, then I failed my 11 plus (no new bike!) and went to Lyndon High School for boys
1967-1972. I completed 1 year at Solihull Technical College. While I was going to
school, I worked at Ray Hitchcocks sports shops, both the one in High Street, and the one
next to Beatties. I then worked at Beatties until I emigrated to Canada in 1975. I
lived the whole time in Windsor Drive, and was part of the Windsor Drive Five, consisting
of myself, Stephen Lewis, Stewart Jackson, Leslie McCoy, and Nick English. we got into
many scrapes together, and had a couple of visits from the local constabulary. Its tough
to remember names from that far back, but I seem to remember another boy in my class with
the same name as me, we were identified by our middle initials, Mark F, and Mark J, I also
remember a Carolyn Grey, who used to live on Dovehouse Lane,
I think, and a Martin Greensmith. At Lyndon I had Mr Armb ( we called him legweak ) and Mr
Dibble for technical drawing, remember his nose, we used to duck whenever he came around
the corner so it wouldn't hit us!! I was madly in love with a girl named Pamela Watson,
her mom ran a hair stylists on Old Lode Lane. I have very fond memories of my times in
Solihull, and would love to get back in touch with some of the people. I now live in the
U.S.A. and don't get much of a chance to get back there. By the way, does anyone remember
the "Captains Locker" pub. it was down some stairs in the High Street, they had
the best chip buttie I ever ate. So, if you were at those schools at the same time, or
remember me from Rays, or Beatties, or even the A.T.C. on Haslucks Green Rd, please send
me an e-mail, I would be thrilled to hear from you. Also if John from 492 Squadron A.T.C.
reads this, please write me again, one of my kids erased your e-mail, and I could not
reply. I hope to hear from someone soon, and remember Up the Blues, Down The Villa !!!

The Phantoms
In 1964 I was one of the four Phantoms, a local 'pop group' that rubbed shoulders with
names that made it like The Applejacks and Denny Laine (Wings) and The Diplomats, but
didn't go professional. The other three Phantoms were: Bob Griffin (bass) who used to live
in New Road and whose father ran Griffin Radio in Bristol Street in Birmingham; Mick Kelly
(drums) who lived in Marston Green and went on in show business I think; and Mick Lawrence
(lead and vocals) who lived near the Rover works. As well as many local gigs, including
the Civic Hall (now no longer, I hear) and a regular spot at The George Hotel Saturday
dance, we also cut some demo discs at a Handsworth recording studio, including Mick
Lawrence's arrangement of Nina Simone's 'You're no good', which mysteriously emerged some
months after it went to a record company as a Swinging Blue Jeans Number One. All I have
to remind me is a copy of our photo in The Solihull News of 12 September 1964 with the
headline "!
Fans mobbed them, ripped their suits"! Having been away from Solihull some 33 years
and now in Hertfordshire, I would dearly love to get in touch with Bob and the two Micks,
and if they've still got them, hear our old demo discs one more time. Is anybody out
there.....?
